Training Program for Master of Landscape Architecture

I. Training objectives
The Master of Landscape Architecture is a professional degree linked to the job qualifications. Based on the professional qualifications of Landscape Architecture, it is a type of degree set up for comprehensively using scientific and humanistic, technical and artistic means to study the living environment, aiming at coordinating the relationship between humans and nature, and training students with strong professional ability and professionalism and innovative thinking to engage in landscape architecture planning, design, construction, protection, and management. It is expected to train high-level, applied, and inter disciplinary talents in the related fields of landscape architecture.
II. Enrollment targets
Current and previous undergraduates (generally with Bachelor’s Degrees) of Landscape Architecture and related specialties.
III. Academic length, credit requirements and training methods
The study model for professional master candidates is full-time, and the academic length is generally 3 years, with a cumulative academic length of less than 5 years.
It consists of three main procedures, including course study, internship and practice, and degree thesis (graduation design). Course study is subject to a credit system and a training method of multiple disciplines and wide range. The University will establish an off-campus landscape architecture promotion practice base suitable for the characteristics of landscape architecture, and encourage practical research through job practice. Degree theses are subject to an advisor responsibility system, and advisors inside and outside the University who have practical experience and qualifications of senior professional technicians are encouraged to provide joint guidance.
Master candidates of Landscape Architecture shall complete the study according to the attached course schedule and the required courses, and gain a total credit of no less than 23 credits (including course credits equal to or greater than 20 credits and training credits equal to or greater than 3 credits). Achieving 70 points or above for required courses and 60 points or above for optional courses is regarded as a pass.
IV. Course setting
Courses for master candidates include degree courses and optional courses. In principle, the course study shall be completed within two semesters after admission. Master candidates with interdisciplinary and equivalent academic qualifications shall make up 2-3 major undergraduate courses under the guidance of their advisors. If they have already completed the make-up courses at the undergraduate level, they can apply for exemption. Grades for make-up courses are recorded only and not included in the total credits.

V. Training and requirements
(i) Training plan
According to the requirements of the training plan and the actual situations of master candidates, the advisor will guide them to prepare individual training plans seriously. Individual training plans shall be completed within four weeks after admission. The individual training plan shall not be changed at will once being prepared. Changes to the individual training plan shall be approved by the advisor, the discipline leader, and the Institute.
(ii) Thesis proposal
According to the training requirements of scientific research and innovation, professional master candidates shall read extensively relevant Chinese and foreign literatures, at least 50 research literatures in total and more than 8 foreign literatures, and write a literature review before the degree thesis proposal.
(iii)Mid-term Assessment
The mid-term assessment shall be carried out in the 4th semester, and the specific requirements are detailed in the documents of the University.
(iv)Cutting-edge lectures on industries
It is required to actively participate in more than 6 cutting-edge lectures on different industries during the study period.
(v) Professional practice
Master candidates are required to engage in practical research for no less than 12 months (no less than 9 months if with work experience) according to the selected topic, preside over or participate in more than 5 practices in landscape engineering design and plant landscaping, and participate in 2 competitions at or above the provincial level (according to the catalog specified for the discipline competition).
(vi) Make-up
Master candidates of Landscape Architecture with equivalent academic qualifications or in other specialties other than Landscape Architecture (Gardening) at undergraduate level shall makeup 2-3 major undergraduate courses, and the grades will not be included in the credits.
VI. Degree thesis
(i) Degree thesis topics and content requirements
The topic selection of the thesis for the master’s degree in Landscape Architecture shall serve urban and rural construction, landscaping, ecological protection, and social development, and shall have a certain degree of difficulty, advancement and workload, which can reflect the author’s abilities to comprehensively use professional theories, methods and technical means to solve problems encountered in landscape architecture planning and construction.
(ii) The thesis may be a technology research and development thesis, management planning, project investigation, project planning and design or other forms.
(iii) Practice assessment:
The landscape engineering design practice projects presided over or participated in shall be exhibited in the form of design exhibitions, and relevant experts and teachers will be organized by the Steering Committee for Training of Master Candidates of Landscape Architecture of Henan Agricultural University for evaluation. Only those with qualified evaluation results can pass the practice assessment.
(iv) Review and defense
Degree thesis shall be reviewed by at least 2 off-campus experts with qualifications of associate senior professional technicians or above. The Defense Committee shall be composed of 3-5 experts. The forms of thesis defense can be varied, and members of the Defense Committee shall include experts with qualifications of or equal to associate senior professional technicians or above in the practice field of landscape architecture.
VII. Degree awarding
Master candidates who have completed the course study and required courses, gained the required credits, completed their degree theses, and passed the degree thesis defense according to the regulations shall be awarded with the Certificate of Graduation for master candidates, and shall acquire the Degree Certificate in Master of Landscape Architecture after being evaluated and approved by the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of the University.
VIII. Other provisions
(i) It is required to establish a regular meeting and exchange system between the advisors and the master candidates, to help the advisors understand the learning situation and problems of master candidates, and check the research progress and writing situation of course study and degree thesis.
(ii) It is required to establish quantitative indicators of degree awarding for trial implementation and personal teaching files for master candidates.
